Torres: I value my place more after being on the outside The former Atletico Madrid and Liverpool striker is determined to prove his doubters wrong and continue to move up on La Roja's list of top scorers By Luis Mira May 31, 2012 12:23:00 AM Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is hopeful that he will continue to score goals for Spain as the national team heads into Euro 2012, and stated that he now places more value in a starting role. The 28-year-old paved the way for La Roja's 4-1 pre-Euro friendly victory against South Korea as he opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the game with a quality header to become the fourth-highest scorer in La Roja's history. Torres' place in the national team squad had been in doubt as a result of a series of disappointing performances with the Blues, but he is looking to repay the trust of coach Vicente del Bosque with goals in Poland and Ukraine. "I had very good feelings," Torres told reporters after the game. "I am training well, with desire and excitement. "Sometimes, when you are out of the team, you give your place a lot more value when you return. I know that this is a reward and I am trying to enjoy every minute." The former Liverpool striker now sits one goal behind former Real Madrid hero Fernando Hierro, who has 29, in the list of top goalscorers, and he hopes to surpass that milestone by the end of the Euros. "What I want is that my goals help the national team. I hope that I can celebrate them in the final and when the Euros are over, I will only have Raul and David Villa in front of me on the list of top scorers. "I have gone through some tough moments, but now I feel fine."
Nigeria and West Brom striker, Peter Odemwingie has given the most candid statement yet on his future at Premiership side, West Brom, when he stated in an interview that he needs a new challenge. After two seasons, where he emerged as top goal scorer - 15 in his first season and 10 in the season just ended, Odemwingie believes he needs to move to a bigger club so that he can win trophies. “It is time for me to struggle for silverware not just for survival in the Premier League,” the Nigerian said to The Sun. “I hope I will leave West Brom keeping warm relations with everybody," Odemwingie added. “I would consider any proposals — even from Russia. But my aim is to stay in England.” This revelation comes on the heels of West Brom losing their manager, Roy Hodgson to England. Odemwingie was excused from Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers in June and this statement is sure to have alerted some Premiership clubs on his availability though he just signed a new contract with West Brom which runs until 2015.

Platini: Turkey can only host either Euro 2020 or the Olympics The Frenchman says that the Eurasian nation's bid for the Games could hamper their desire to stage the European Championship, both of which will be held in 2020 By Enis Koylu May 25, 2012 10:33:00 AM Uefa president Michel Platini has indicated that he would not support Turkey's bid to host Euro 2020 if the country persists with its bid for the Olympic games. Turkey are so far the only nation to launch a formal bid for the European Championship, but the three 'Celtic' nations - Wales, Scotland and Ireland - have expressed and interest in hosting. Turkey are also bidding for Istanbul to host the Olympic Games the same year, and Platini has stated that he would only back the country's bid for Euro 2020 should they fail in their Olympics hosting attempt. "If Turkey is given the Olympic Games they will not have the Euros," Platini affirmed at the Fifa congress in Budapest. "If they don't get the Olympics, and they still bid for the Euros, I will still vote for them. The two decisions will not be made at the same time. "They can carry on bidding for both if they want - I'm not particularly happy about that, but it's their problem, not mine. But if they get the Games, they won't get the Euros. "The can gain everything, or lose everything." A final decision over who will host Euro 2020 is likely to be made at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014
